About Us

Built for adventurous drivers

Adventure Star helps travellers feel more confident when hiring vehicles for unforgettable road trips.

What we do

Most rental companies charge an eye-watering excess if anything happens to the vehicle, and if you’re driving somewhere properly adventurous, like a gravel pass in the Highlands or an F-road in Iceland, that risk goes up fast. Worse, many standard excess insurance policies sold by third-party providers (including the ones sold at the rental desk) simply won’t pay out for damage sustained off sealed, paved roads at all. Read the small print and you’ll often find exclusions for “unsurfaced roads” or “unpaved tracks” which rules out huge parts of the world’s most exciting road trips.

We built Adventure Star specifically to close that gap. Our excess cover is designed for hire cars driven on gravel, dirt, and unsealed roads, so a stone chip, a cracked windscreen, or a scraped underbody doesn’t turn into a bill running into the thousands. Buy your policy in minutes, get a confirmation you can show your rental company if needed, and drive knowing you’re properly protected (not just technically insured).

Who we cover

If your idea of a good road trip involves a bit of gravel under the tyres, we’re for you.

  • Self-drive adventurers taking on iconic routes like the Dalton Highway in Alaska, Iceland’s F-roads, or Scotland’s NC500
  • Overlanders and 4×4 hirers exploring places like Namibia, Mongolia, or the Australian Outback
  • Ski and mountain trip drivers navigating snow, ice, and unsealed mountain passes
  • Anyone hiring a car that strays off the beaten track; think Welsh hill tracks, Irish coastal backroads, or Alpine passes

Whatever your adventure has in store for you, if there’s a chance you’ll leave the tarmac, we’ve built our cover with you in mind.

Why we’re different

Most excess insurance is written for people driving between airports and hotels. We wrote ours for more intrepid travellers.

  • We don’t hide behind “unsurfaced road” exclusions. Many standard policies quietly exclude gravel, dirt, and unpaved driving in the terms often without making it obvious at point of sale. We tell you upfront exactly what’s covered and what isn’t.
  • We know the routes. From the F-roads of Iceland to remote Highland passes, we’ve researched the terrain our customers actually drive on, not just generic “road trip” cover.
  • Straightforward claims. No hoops, no jargon, no chasing us for weeks. Send us your documents and we aim to have things moving quickly.
  • Honest pricing. One clear premium for your trip with no confusing tiers or hidden add-ons.

Where we’ve got you covered

We’ve mapped our cover against the routes our customers actually drive and not just “worldwide” small print that falls apart the moment you check the exclusions.

Popular routes we cover include:

  • Iceland F-roads, the Ring Road, and highland tracks
  • Scotland NC500, Highland gravel passes, island roads
  • USA & Canada Dalton Highway (Alaska), remote National Park access roads
  • Wales & Ireland coastal and hill backroads
  • Continental Europe Alpine mountain passes, rural gravel routes in France and Spain
  • Southern Africa Namibian gravel roads, South African backcountry routes
  • Australia Outback tracks and unsealed regional roads

Planning a route that isn’t listed? Get in touch before you book. If it’s driveable in a hire car, there’s a good chance we can cover it, and if we can’t, we’ll tell you honestly rather than take your money.
